Dr. Abhishek Kar

Dr. Abhishek Kar is an interdisciplinary energy-access researcher and policy advisor specializing in clean cooking transitions, household energy, and air quality across South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. He has over eighteen years of interdisciplinary research experience spanning behavior change, energy access, air pollution, and policy analysis. His work combines primary field research and large-scale data analysis with engagement with government and multilateral bodies on LPG, piped natural gas, and electric-cooking policy.

Dr. Kar currently serves as a Fellow at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) and as an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at Columbia University and as a Fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

He holds a Ph.D. in Resources, Environment and Sustainability from UBC, an MBA in Forestry Management from the Indian Institute of Forest Management, and a B.Sc. in Physics (Honours) from the University of Calcutta.

His research has been published in leading journals including Nature Energy, Environmental Science & Technology, and Energy Research & Social Science, with his work featured on the covers of Nature Energy in September 2019 and April 2024.
