AM/NS INDIA
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) is a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, two of the world’s foremost steelmakers. It was established in December 2019 following the acquisition of Essar Steel. AM/NS India is an integrated producer of flat steel. The company operates across the full value chain, from captive iron ore and pellet making to ready-to-market products. Its portfolio includes over 600 steel grades, several of which serve as substitutes for imports. AM/NS India serves critical industries, including automotive, infrastructure, defence, agriculture, and energy. The company makes a significant contribution to the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
AM/NS India is rapidly expanding its scale and capabilities. The Hazira plant is undergoing a major upgrade. The project will raise upstream capacity from 9 MTPA to 15 MTPA by 2026. New downstream facilities for advanced automotive-grade steel are also being added. Meanwhile, the company has started work on a 7.3 MTPA integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh. This is part of a long-term roadmap to grow capacity to 40 MTPA. The plan includes investments of over INR 2.6 lakh crore (US$30 billion) over the next decade. These efforts reinforce AM/NS India’s role as a key driver of India’s steel growth ambitions and global competitiveness.
Sustainability and inclusive growth are central to AM/NS India’s strategy. The company has committed to reducing emissions intensity by 20% by 2030, advancing renewable energy integration, and investing in technologies such as hydrogen-based steelmaking and CCUS. Beyond operations, AM/NS India generates direct employment for over 1.6 lakh people and enriches the lives of millions nationwide through its wide-ranging CSR interventions. Guided by the vision of “Smarter Steels, Brighter Futures,” the company combines global expertise with local responsibility to deliver sustainable value for industry, society, and the nation.
